It's okay to be slow, provided you can "read" and react with appropriate techniques. I've witnessed elderly masters whom you hardly can lay a finger on the head because of their sharpened intuition and proper reactions. In that sense, speed and power is secondary, although useful when you are young ; )

Some things that can be obeserved among western practitioners: Westerners, esp. their upper body don't make much use of 3D space, probably due to their tall bulky structure. 2ndly, the focus on strength rather than agility. Speed comes from how quick accelerate from one point to another, within the 3D sphere and that related to nimbleness and agility. Maybe the western mentality has always been 2D boxing or the swordsmanship of knights.
