TN Symphonic Band Winter Concert 2007 Toccata for Band

Terra Nova High School Symphonic Band plays the piece, Toccata for Band by Frank Erickson. The clarinets are pretty "strong" in this performance. Rayne plays the 1st part in this with first chair clarinetist Josh...who is a very STRONG player, well that's why he's first chair....(sorry Rayne, we can hardly hear you) so I have the cam on that side the entire time. This was one very powerful piece and unfortunately, I missed the last thirteen or so measures due to my dvd running out, but you'll get the idea. With only a limited amount of time..approx. a month's time...of rehearsals, they tackled the piece well. I don't know about you, but this piece reminds me of an Indiana Jones style movie score....awesome. The TN Symphonic Band features the same members as their marching band, with a few additional members.

Try as I might, I couldn't hold the cam steady enough due to the fact I had my toddler next to me conversing with her big bro..yeah I know, I'm always makin' excuses. Apologies for the little one's talking in the background.

You are hearing 14 flutes, 1 oboe, 7 clarinets, including 1 bass clarinet, 10 saxophones(2 tenor, 1 bari), 1 horn, 4 trumpets, 8 trombones, 1 baritone, 2 tubas, cymbals, snare, timpani....

Look..I've heard a lot of Toccatta pieces...and this one by far is one of the better ones...cuz the tempo is right on yeah okay so all ya hear is clarinets, well duh, its obvious that the camera is right in front of them!! HELLO TBONE? the cam is pickin them up first! ok ok i agree clarinets kinda harsh, some squeaks, blah blah...but theyz still kept up with the tempo..oh yeah brass, you guys were awesome!!!

Reality check: on a tiny cafeteria stage plus camcorder right in front of clarinets = lousy acoustics and poor sound quality and ok...we needed way more rehearsals on this one.

oh and at 3:45 that high e is usually out of tune for most of us too

I hope your 1st seat first clarinet is better live. I'm in seventh grade, playing 1st clarinet second seat, and I sound better than him.

whoa!!!Clarinets!! I rememeber this  peice i loved it...play clarinet on it as well.
