Cameraman Gets Clobbered By Wide Receiver at USC game

This happened to me at the South Carolina/Kentucky game on Oct. 8, 2005. I walked away o.k. The lick got me a shot on Fox News Channel.

For those interested, I walked away from the hit with only a bruised knee. The camera had to have a new eyepiece, but was back in use the next week (it subsequently got retired in May when the station bought tapeless cameras). Syvelle and I finally got to discuss the hit last August. He offered an apology, which I told him was not necessary since I was the one in his way.

When I asked Steve Spurrier for his thoughts, he said, "I'm glad Syvelle didn't get hurt."

I'll assume you've never been a photographer/videographer on a sideline. Especially for a popular team like USC, you don't exactly have a lot of room to move and frankly, this guy was screwed anyway. The players can do their best to jump/fall over or around photographers, but there is only so much that can be done.
