It all started when a friend at the pub gave me some hops rhizomes (Cascade and Sunbeam) this spring. I thought I had the perfect trellis for them to grow up, but I had to rework the dirt below. That led to building terraces and planting all kinds of companions to the noble vines. First there were herbs, then greens, then mints galore. And flowers to attract the birds and bees.

I also had to rebuild the stone patio above the terrace, because it was sliding down the slope. You can tell how much I love rocks and stones by the time i spend on them in this video. I don't know why I spent so much time on the landlady's kiwi vine. Probably because I have heard her talk about it so much. It has never produced fruit.

I neglected to mention the nasturtiums. Long live the edible flower. Actually, it doesn't live long, you've got to pluck it and eat it quick. I like a garden where pretty much anything can be plucked and eaten, although I'd rather look at it, frankly.

  • Not likely there will be enough hops for that in the first year. But I might make some tea, or add it to my shampoo, or... I just like smelling the aroma!

  • I love your garden and patio! You've done some great work on it :) I'm not much of a gardener myself, but I appreciate how much work it is and how great it is to see results - I've helped my family some around theirs.

    You gonna make some beer?
