On Friday, May 9, Cicero Town President Larry Dominick called a press conference held at the town's new Community Center where he was joined by members of the families of Miguel Flores (22) and Erick Lagunas (21), two young men killed in a car crash last Thanksgiving involving off-duty Chicago police officer John Ardelean and a third victim who survived the crash. They called on Chicago police to provide the necessary evidence against Ardelean in order that he may subject to a successful felony prosecution. Nancy Flores (sister of Miguel Flores) and Jose Lagunas (brother of Erick Lagunas) were joined at the press conference by their attorney Dan O'Connor, Cicero town officials, State Sen. Martin Sandoval and State Rep. Lisa Hernandez.
On Wednesday, Cook County Judge Don Panarese tossed out aggravated driving under the influence charges against Ardelean, citing a lack of evidence as to Ardelean's "intoxication" at the time of the crash.
"Today I join the Flores and Lagunas families, as well as the many Cicero families I have heard from on this matter," said Cicero Town President Larry Dominick, "in calling on the Chicago Police and the Cook County State's Attorney's office to devote the necessary manpower to gather the requisite evidence--including any evidence of official misconduct in the post-crash investigation--to re-file felony charges against Officer Ardelean in the interests of justice."
