An interesting example of 1960s TV, this 1961 episode of "As the World Turns" is about a mother's struggle to get her son back after being forced to put him up for adoption years before. This copy runs a short 23 minutes, though I must note that even in the 1960s, daytime shows ran for less minutes of "show" than prime-time series of the period (which, in the US, was usually about 24 to 26 minutes of "show").

For those who want it, I also uploaded a MPEG2 copy to the Internet Archive:

  • Pat Bruder as Ellen kept a similar hairstyle for a good while...til the early 80's i think. In 1999, I sat next to her on the subway and had a very nice chat with her. I was a typical soap fan...i called her "ellen".

  • This was great. Just normal every day drama.

  • It Suckt then and it stil suckt now hahaha i am glad its over

  • This video makes me horny...

  • I hated how they ended ATWT. the proper way would have been to end all the shows later charecters stories two weeks before the end. and the last two weeks for bob, penny, don, lisa, ellen, david, tom, john, susan,to all enteract. the perfect end would have been to have bob, penny, and don, sitting and recalling old times in the huges family with actual clips of the shows past.the last clip would have been the first of nancy talking about her family the way it all began in 1956, the end. then the organ.

  • In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:20, It Was "As The World Turns" Video Open From April 21, 1961.

  • This was way ahead if ti's time. A single woman who wants to get her illegitimate child back. Must have been quite a scandal in 1961. No wonder ATWT was # 1.

  • @txquis She always wore her hair in a bun.

  • It would have been nice if they had brought back Penny and Ellen for the last week of ATWT. Nancy's funeral is next week. You'd think that Don and Penny would come home.

  • I hope they can bring back Ellen and Penny for the last episodes of this show. Trully the end of an era.

  • Yes I remember throughout the years Ellen (Pat Bruder) had pretty much the same hairstyle and then in the late 70's or early 80's Ellen (Pat Bruder) decided to have a new hairstyle. Oh how I miss Ellen Lowell Cole Stewart!

  • Yeah, I second EONSFTFAN's comment about TV being so much better in the 60s+70s. It wasn't built to satisfy a focus group or for a 1-minute attention span or for visual effects. From the Prisoner to Larry Sanders, it was way better.

    (IMHO too, of course.)
