... the specs say you can run a 200mW peak for a moment, so you can make a circuit that modulate additional spikes across the regular CW current, in order to increase the RMS power while staying within specs.

slightly over what the rating is, i forgot what the normal specs are, but if I remember correctly it's about 200mA (I think the original specs limit it to 170mA) but if you overpower it slightly it doesnt seem to hurt the diode, especially if you dont power it long. There is also another trick to getting more power....

theres no lighter its a powerful laser that has a collimater lens that focuses the beam to a very fine point... its all about beam density and not the power level... see other videos of laser pointers of similar intensity, especially where the collimator is dynamic focus.
