As an Englishman, I should hate Maradona. But I'm sorry, I don't. He's the best ever. Not only a genius on the pitch, a guy that could look after himself too. Goikoetxea was a thug, should have been in jail.

I like Maradona, but I think that what you said is absolute nonsense.
Pele never left Santos for the big wages on offer in Europe, he played in the USA at the very end of his career and presumably has an attachment to the place, probably for that reason and also the USA never having a world cup before was the reason for him to say that.
They are both great legends of the game and it does them a disservice to keep throwing them against one another.

@naughtytoliet There had been 50 fouls in that game and months earlier, Andoni Goikoetxea, one of the men kicked, had folded Maradona's leg in half with a disgusting challenge. I would assume...

@RossMunro23 that is true, but dont forget he is also the god of soccer. when u judge a person, u have to look at his both good and bad thing. he was into drugs, but thats the mistake he made and we are human we make mistakes, but the difference between maradona and us human is, "we cannot play soccer like marodona" but hey we can worship him because he is the god when it comes to the game.

Crazy barbarians.
On the field yes, I would like a son like Maradona. Off the field too. I'm not excusing his addiction. Obviously I think it's wrong. But Maradona has always stood up for what he believed in. Pele stood up for what his latest business endevour was. Do you think Pele became rich playing for Santos?
Do you know what Pele said about holding a World Cup in the USA? That it was his DREAM to see it there. They offered him and Maradona unbelievable sums to say that. Do you think Maradona said it?

Pele is a sell out. Give him a cheque and he'll sell anything you want him to. Maradona never claimed to be a role model. I'd prefer an honest person who makes mistakes that someone who does not stand by anything.
Besides, what Maradona did off the field doesn't matter. On the field he has never been matched.
