Being Creative With Tourette Syndrome- summer 2011 This is an invitation to people who have Tourette Syndrome to join me in sharing our twitches both vocal and motor tics via a short video. You can send your video to band of artists here on youtube. Although it is not necessary, feel free to also talk about your experience with having Tourettes. My Tourettes often reveals itself through a series of movements and sounds known as tics. My twitches are a way in which to orient myself in space and time, like an added sensory exploration. Other than a neurological explanation behind this disorder, I can not fully explain why the tics must be performed in such a ritualistic way or why one movement satisfies more than another. What I have come to discover however, is that when I'm moving through a combination of twitches, I feel a sense of rhythm. The rhythm is not one of a calming nature and is often interrupted by erratic off beat tics. The overall sensation it creates is similar to a dance or music where there is build up of tension that eventually explodes before settling back down and starting the process all over again.

Everett Dance Theatre is presenting a Brain Cafe every month at their theatre in Providence, RI. Their goal is to create "dialogue at the intersection of Neuroscience, Medicine and Art". There is always a neuroscientist who makes a presentation about a topic that corresponds to the story/dance that the company is presenting. The audience is included in the discussion that takes place throughout the evening.

I approached the Everett Dance Theatre about making a Brain Café that features Tourette Syndrome with the idea of making a dance with my twitches, both vocal and motor tics. The Everett people were interested in collaborating with me and also wanted to know if there were others with Tourettes that wanted to participate in this choreography experiment. We then created this youtube invitational.

Everett Dance Theatre is a 501-3 non-profit. They have been in existence for over twenty-five years. They are known for incorporating science and the performing arts. Look at past Brain Cafes on their web site: http://www.everettdancetheatre.org/

Band of Artists (BOA) is a collective of innovative thinkers and creators whose mission is to elevate disabilities into various art forms. Currently, BOAs mission is to collaborate with Everett Dance Theatre to experiment with the idea that Tourette Syndrome, along with its wide range of movements/twitches that accompany it, can be transformed into a dance performance. Here is Band of Artists' youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/bandofartists

We really need your help in order to make this vision a success. I know it is not easy to voluntarily reveal your Tourettes for dancers and choreographers to study but if you can muster up the courage just think how awesome it would be to see your movements and your experiences having tourettes incorporated into a dance. The only requirement is that you have Tourette Syndrome. Please don't try faking it. Since I have Tourettes myself, I'm pretty good at detecting an authentic twitch and plus that's just not cool. So, without further ado, let's get this project started! Thanks for taking the time to watch, read and consider this unique opportunity. You can just send BOA a link to your video here on youtube.

Thank you,

Sutie Madison
