Polo is not only the sport of the Kings but in this case it is also a compassionate sport as many of the polo ponies are rescued thoroughbreds. Often horses that are bred for racing and are not fast enough end up with a short life, these horses are pampered receiving the best of care, attention and love.
@Hedvig616 As you say, it is true that you can find good or bad horsemen in any discipline. Racing's no different. I agree that there's two sides to the story in the world of racing. Just as everywhere else, some people take horses for granted. The admirable ones treat their horses like royalty. I hesitate to say that I 'rescue' TB's off the track, if you can call it that? I think I'm getting an insane bargain on a horse that's bizarrely under-priced for all the effort/expense put into it.

-oh, yeah, and two of the horses in "my" stable will never race. They are still at the track to be trained so they can be sold as regular riding horses.
Simply because its better for them not to be moved around.

I work with racehorses. In Denmark, that is.
And yes, there are bad trainers, bad breeders and bad riders in this industry.
BUT the horses in many danish top riding stalls (dressage fx), are WAY worse off than the racehorses i ride every day.
"My" horses are in good condition, they are happy, well fed, clean and well excercised. And the people there pet them, let them out in the paddock everyday, brush them over and everything you can imagine.
They are definately not mistreated.

I owned a rescued thoroughbred who is now a polo pony... a sick industry, racing is. She looked way worse than that first horse did.
