The grasshoppers (and hornet) suffered from too much unsprung weight. You can see the back end jumping up and down badly in this video. Still, I had fun with mine back in the eighties. When the fox came out, I went to that.
well guys ive got a brushless grasshopper and beleive me when i say with a 10t passion speed brushless system it licks the ass off my ansmann vapor 28 4.2 buggy with a frog pinon gear on and its been fliped crashed bounced jumped ,and ive not replaced a thing,so stick that in your diary
Grasshopper was one of the cheapest entry-level buggies there ever was... Tyco seemingly pretty much ripped off this design (and name) for their very popular Turbo Hopper line of toys, and to be honest the performance wasn't all that different. At least you could fix it. The cost of real RC cars was very prohibitive back then. Even a Grashopper was around $500 to get going with everything, which is like $700-800 today. Compare that to $200 for a new Slash.
these cars wernt too bad but the second gen ones had better speed controllers and better battery packs but they still used the 380 motors
when i had mine when i was a teenager i modifyed it with a very powerfull 540 motor and the highest ni-cad packs they had back then, still it wasnt fast enough so i made the 6 cell pack into a 8 cell with another modification to the battery pack
lets say the ceramic heatsink lasted 5 min's so i uprated all the speed controller, it was extremly fast then
years ago i was kicked out of a rc car club due to my driving a hotshot with a blackwell motor, and all the parents bitched i was beating their little angels and thier grasshoppers and hornets, hands down time after time
Well, they sucked back then, too. They are a novelty. Compared to RC 10's, Yokomos, Shumacher Cats, Ultimas, and Team Losi products, forget it. Put a modified in any of those cars, and the race was over.
Every bugger-nosed brat with freckles, ADHD, and an out of control ego had a Hornet. That's what the yuppy parents bought their brats. I remeber this shit like it was yesterday, now. "I got a Hornet, I got a Hornet. It will smoke your Toys R' Us car." That's when I would get my RC 10, and the talk stopped, and the jealousy began.
