Red Bank, N.J. has seen its share of Snow Storms this winter, but all that snow has not lowered temps enough to keep local Ice Boaters out on the Navesink River for as long as they would like.

In a good year, according to ice boater Frank "Baw" Tallman, the Navisink provides three to four weeks of good ice sailing. "This year has only provided one week," he said recently. "And even then, we only got 4 to 5 inches of ice instead of the 8 to 9 inches we need to bring out the heavier boats."

Over President's weekend, a small group of hard water sailors from the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club braved the thin ice for a day of racing. One boater who would only identify himself as "Jimmy" fell through the thin ice in front of Irwin Marine.

"Ice and Weather are hard to predict," said former Ice boat club Commodore Douglas MacFarland. "But we don't worry about it. If the ice doesn't come to us, we go to where the ice is."
