the sword play seemed to be rather accurate right on down to the quillion hook and the reverse swing to engage the pommel to strike at the face

Fully agree that skill (and when it takes longer: strength) wins usually a fight. And that the noob has to win as quickly as possible, because he probably won't get a second chance. But he usually doesn't win.

Btw: that is also why most self defense systems depend on the "one hit and it is over" method. "Death by a thousand cuts" is a very dangerous strategy for the one meting it out.
