@jonamond The red line is the minimum speed you can accelerate from in 5th gear on a flat surface.. This is written in the Service Manual

@jonamond i think that its there to signify the speed limit for town driving, assuming the town limit is 50km/h

@TheTerraWrist In Canada the speed limit for city streets is 50 km/h, that is why there is a red line at 50.

Looks like your TDI might need some new suspension like mine does. I hate it at night when I am shifting I can see the headlights dipping up and down through the gears. I can even make it happen laying into the throttle going down the interstate and mine is bone stock!
