That bit in Ferris Bueller's Day off where Cameron has a freakout is an homage to Bill Viola's experimental video work, Anthem, both pointing to a moment of white middle-class hysteria. While the John Hughes film is ostensibly an homage to Chicago, the actual Bueller house is in Long Beach, CA where Bill Viola is based.

  • I mean this is shit

  • That's totally right. Das ist doch alles Scheiße!

  • I hadn't seen Anthem before - but the scream in Ferris Bueller is also similar to Viola's "Spaces between the Teeth"

  • I just saw Spaces and it makes me think that John Hughes' DP was a Bill Viola fan or else both were in the same thrall, same penchant for visual gags that wax romantic.
