An anthem, dedicated for people that are going thru hard times.

De Danann with Mary Black, Tommy Flemming, Maura O'Connell and Eleanor Shanley

Stephen Foster's original lyrics:

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears,
While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;
Oh Hard times come again no more.

Chorus:

"Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh hard times come again no more."

While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door;
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
Oh hard times come again no more.

(Chorus)

There's a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away,
With a worn heart whose better days are o'er:
Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day,
Oh hard times come again no more.

(Chorus)

Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave,
Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore
Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
Oh hard times come again no more.

(Chorus)

  • Mary Black! What can i say,,,,,, she is good and then there`s Mr Tommy Flemming. BRILLIANT

  • @smeejit That version is my personal favorite, but this one is beautiful too.

  • Great version; the one by Alison Krauss, James Taylor, Mark O'Connor & Yo-yo Ma is another fave.

  • I too really like this version of this song. The Tommy Fleming version is so commercial it overtook my facebook posting. This version is pure and simple, and a testament to Mary Black in her interpretation of good music. Awesome. Peace be with you.

  • Thanks for posting this, I really enjoy this version! It doesn't hurt that Im related to the great Stephen Foster! =)

  • This beatiful song helps me thru my hard times :-)

  • There are many great versions of this song, Mavis Staples maybe at top of the list, but this one may be her sternest competition. No coincidence I fear that it is the Irish and the descendants of Africans brought to this land in chains that feel it most deeply. Thanks for a great post, unavailable anywhere else.

  • Thank you for this beautiful video♫ ***** ♫.
