Ever wondered why people exercise with heart rate...and what exactly a heart rate monitor IS? This video answers those questions, showing how training with heart rate provides motivation to workout smarter, track your progress, get feedback and reach your personal fitness goals. Plus, we demonstrate what exactly a Polar training computer is and how it works. In this first half, were speaking with a busy mom - a mother of three with a full-time job - who's trying to get back into shape and needs some motivation.
Full transcript: Jennifer: Hi. I'm Jennifer Villani, and I'm part of the Polar product expert team. Today we're talking about heart rate training and how it can help you exercise smart and reach your exe rise goals. Through the experience of two everyday people, we're going to show you how a Polar training computer can motivate you, provide guidance, and allow you to have fun. But first, we want to answer the question: what is a training computer, also known as a heart rate monitor? In the most simple terms, a training computer consists of two things: a fabric chest trap with a snap off transmitter and a wrist watch. The chest strap measures your heart rate, sends that information wirelessly to the watch, and the watch displays your heart rate on an easy- to-read digital screen. It's the easiest and most accurate way to show you how hard your body's working and what you've achieved during an exercise. Now onto motivation. To help us demonstrate how exercise with heart rate can help motivate you, our first guest is Leslie.
Leslie: Hi
Jennifer: Leslie, tell us a little about yourself
Leslie: Okay. I'm 33 years old. I'm A high school teacher, married, and I just had my third kid.
Jennifer: Congratulations.
Leslie: Thank you. I've been running since I was in high school. After college, I got more serious. I started doing some 5ks and mini marathons but since the 3rd kid, I'm having a little bit more difficulty getting back into the swing of things and I'd like to start running again.
Jennifer: Well it seems like you have a lot going on. What would you say is your biggest challenge with incorporating exercise back into your everyday life?
Leslie: Finding the time in my day to actually fit in exercise when I have three kids to look after, and then I would have to say motivation too because when I do fit it in, I'm down in the basement on the treadmill watching TV, so, not very motivating.
Jennifer: Okay, well training with a Polar training computer will help in three ways. It's going to provide real-time feedback. So regardless of which activity you choose, it's going to help keep you efficient and on track during exercise.
Leslie: Okay so I can use it when I'm on the treadmill, or I can use it if I'm taking the baby for a walk?
Jennifer: Exactly, regardless of the activity. The other thing is calories. If you're trying to lose a few extra pounds, or you're on some specific weight training program or weight loss program.
Leslie: Like trying to work off my sundae from last night when I was cheating?
Jennifer: You can make up for it the next day. What it's going to do is tell you how many calories you're burning during exercise and then summarize it for you at the end of your work out. So really, that's a great motivational tool. The last thing it's going to do is help you take the guesswork out of it. When people are getting into back into an exercise routine, a lot of people think you need to be sweating, out of breath, and its painful. So to help with that and to motivate you and keep you on track and really quantify what you're doing while you're exercising, the Polar training computer is the perfect tool for that.

I've been using a heart rate monitor for the last ten years, the only brand I've experimented with and utilized has been Polar. Does Polar have any specialists or training professionals in Los Angeles??

It's a bit patronising when personal trainers automatically suggest that people are trying to lose fat.
