Thank you for pointing out the crime deterrent advantages of talking to oneself while cycling. I ride often across Northwest Indiana (including Gary) and no one has beat me down yet. You can credit holding these one person conversations with keeping me safe...or at least keeping me company. However, you're wrong about the brakes. Both front and rear are in good working order.

you know what worries me in gary is children crossing the street! Is that Broadway?

I hate Gary, but I drive through it to get to the mall sometimes

That Ace Hardware is now a HeadStart type daycare. The Ace Hardware on 13th and Broadway is still there though.

Yes, and they slowed down right in front of my bicycle...and I was flying on my Gary Fisher mountain bike. People just don't notice bikes. We are still an "automobile only" oriented society and I hope that changes soon.
...with that said, kids in Gary (and probably elsewhere) don't seem to notice automobiles either and will stroll out in front of a moving car in a hot second.

Yes, that is Broadway a bit south of 47th Avenue.

In normal places, if you run a red light, you could get killed. In places like Detroit and Gary, it's the exact opposite! :(

You could get killed running red lights in Gary as well. I shouldn't have done it and usually I DO wait for the light. I'm not in a big hurry.
