Do you have rules that make it hard for you to be happy?
Does your happiness depend on external circumstances which are beyond your control?
Is your happiness future based?
Here's a few examples of rules for happiness:-
I'll be happy when - I've got this job completed.
I'll be happy when - I've lost a stone in weight.
I'll be happy when - I get my car fixed.
I'll be happy when - my partner/husband/wife stops nagging me.
I'll be happy when - I earn more money.
I'll be happy when - I get that new car.
I'll be happy when - I've paid off my mortgage.
I'll be happy when - I get a new job.
I'll be happy when - my husband does his share of the housework.
I'll be happy when - my kids stops making a mess.
I'll be happy when - my baby sleeps through the night.
I'll be happy when - the summer comes.
I'll be happy when - it's not so hot.
I'll be happy when - I can retire.
I'll be happy when - I win the lottery.
Do you get the gist?
Some of these rules for happiness make it incredibly difficult for you to be happy, in the moment.
Think about your own rules for happiness and the things you say to yourself. Are any of these rules out of your control, like winning the lottery? Are any future based, like retirement? Are any of them just plain difficult, like your kids not making a mess or your baby sleeping through the night?
Think about the things that you are in control of, such as losing weight. You can choose to be happy about being aware of your diet, making positive diet changes, being more health aware.
You can talk things through with your partner/husband/wife and find out why they are nagging and how you can work together. You can be happy whilst you look for a new job. You can acknowledge the beauty of the winter and know that without the contrast, you would not appreciate the summer.
Make it easy for yourself to be happy. Look for all the things in life that you can appreciate and be grateful for. If you're stuck where to begin, look in the mirror in the morning and appreciate that you have vision and you can see yourself.
Look at your amazing body and the range of movements and functions it performs. Think about the immense power of your brain, more powerful than a super-computer if you use it correctly.
Start being "unreasonably happy".
