(Selena's POV)

It's been four months since Demi left, and Joe mopes around without really speaking to anyone. He doesn't hang out with friends, all he does is school work and count down the days until he can leave and go to college. He once told me that everything here reminded him of Demi and he just wanted out of this town. I felt so useless, nothing I could do or say would help him. Except find Demi, which I've been trying to do for the past two months but I've had no luck. She didn't want to be found and she was doing a good job of it.

(Demi's POV)

I had found a steady job working at a small convenience store in town. I hadn't made too many friends, but I was getting very close to the owner of the store, a woman in her late 20s named Kelly. She was very sweet and treated me like a little sister. She went with me to all my OBGYN appointments and coached me through my pregnancy, since she too had a daughter of her own named Lucy, but we called her LuLu, who was six years old. Kelly had her when she was 21, and although she was a couple years older than I am now, she didn't have a steady boyfriend or life at the time and the father left her and the baby. "Good afternoon, darling." Kelly greeted me, entering her shop one afternoon. I stood up from my seat behind the counter and gave her a hug. LuLu came running in wearing a princess costume. She always dressed up, no matter the occasion.
"Dee Dee!" LuLu cheered, going around the counter and wrapping her tiny arms around round waist. It was moments like these when I began to get excited about motherhood.

"You know that pregnancy glow people always talk about?" I asked jokingly.
"Yeah." Kelly replied, lifting her daughter up and placing her on the counter.
"Yeah, no, I don't have that unless they're referring to the sweaty, fat mess I always am. Is it ever going to cool down in this dang town?" I questioned, being careful to not curse in front of LuLu.
"You look wonderful, Demi. I gained twenty pounds in my first trimester alone. And you look teeny tiny still and your five months pregnant." She assured me, patting the top of my baseball cap. I looked down at my growing belly.
"But I'm not really huge yet so I feel like I don't look pregnant...just really chubby in the belly. Oh my God people probably think I have a beer belly! Ugh." I sighed, sitting back down.
"Shutup you look great, and believe me in this small town everyone knows you're pregnant and if they didn't they'd be able to tell, you definitely look like you have a bun in the oven. Speaking of your belly though, you only have five more weeks until your maternity leave, just to remind you. And it's paid maternity leave, so don't worry about the money situation okay?"
"That's way too generous of you." I told her.
"Please, you need it. Just thank me." She winked.
"Thank you, I appreciate it so much."
"I hate to bring this up but..what are you going to do when the baby actually comes? You need help, have you ever thought about going back to the father?" Kelly asked me, unscrewing the cap of a glass bottle of chocolate milk. She placed a straw in it and handed it to her daughter who started to drink it right away.
"I'll be fine, I've been on my own practically my entire life. Plus, it's too late for that anyways."
"But now you have another LIFE to be on your own with. And it's never too late for that, Demi. Your baby is going to want to know who their father is eventually."
"Can we please not talk about this right now, Kell? I'm getting a raging headache." I whined, rubbing my temples.
"Fine." She finished.

One month later - six months pregnant.

"You ready to close up? Your doctor's appointment is in 15 minutes." Kelly asked me one evening. I nodded as I locked up the cash register and grabbed a water bottle. "So today's the big day!" I tried to be cheerful, I really did. But I just couldn't find the excitement..today I was going to find out the gender of Joe and I's child. And I still wasn't happy about it. Kelly told me I would be when I heard the heartbeat, and I wasn't, then she said when I got my first ultrasound I would be...and I wasn't, the baby just looked like a peanut, not even a real thing. I was beginning to lose hope, and if I didn't change my attitude soon I would have to seriously consider adoption, because who wants to have a mother that doesn't want them? Just like my parents didn't want me...
