The truly sad thing is, that even right up to the very moment of human extinction, people will still think that. We can go to Soylent Green; we can go to something even worse...but no matter how far down as we go, the advocates of this type of mentality, for the most part will never once question it.

I've given up trying to get through to people like you. You cannot be reached. The problem is, that the only thing left after that is despair.

Freedom is slavery. Self-restraint is freedom.

    Got it.

If that's your philosophy, then you must have a painful internal war going on inside of you. I know what that's like, believe me. But you can free yourself from it.

Suppressing your desires isn't enough. Eventually you'll crack and a perverse form of your desires will come back out again. Instead, you need to look inside yourself and analyze your desires. Then correct them if you have to.

Mind and body, thought and desire, can be united.

Gordon Gekko suffers from an inability to understand Greed.

He talk about Greed for knowledge, but you can't be greedy for knowledge. Knowledge isn't something that is in short supply. It is unlimited. You can't be greedy about something that is unlimited because Greed, by its very nature, is about something that is limited.

Now, to those who may point to Patents and other forms of knowledge and say those are limited, I would say that Patents are not strictly in the realm of knowledge.

    Egoism will set you free.

This is not the case. Egoism is about ENSLAVING yourself to your desires. Action that is SOLELY on behalf of your desire is not a free action. A free action is whereby you choose to act out of a law you give yourself. This is freedom. It is the ability to rise above your desires.

Correction: Greed is only good based on what you're greedy about and only to a certain extent. As humans, our top priority shouldn't be money, but on improving the world that we live in. Remember kids, Money is merely a shadow of reality. Improve the world we live in and the money will follow

Actually processes and gains both matter, though people often use the former as an excuse when they fail.

When passion drives you, it is the process that matters. When greed drives you, it is the gain that matters. Which one do you think creates a happy life ?

The Gordon Gekko character poses two problems. The obvious problem is ethics, which one perceives clearly (hopefully) by the end of the movie. The less obvious, insidious, subversive problem is rhetorical: "greed is good" is an expression of passion for achieving and enjoying success; Gekko is all about that. But it smuggles in 'greed' as something worthy of your passion. Be careless about that distinction and you become Bud Fox, seduced by Gekko's passion into greedy, unethical behavior.
