I started this project in 1987 while living on the Seminole reservation in Hollywood Florida. I was creating a TV station for the then 4 main Seminole reservations situated in Florida. Unfortunately I ran into resistance and opposition when I tried to expose teen drinking, the formation of gang activity and vandalism.
While trying to work on this project I was confronted violently by Jacob Osceola, who held the lease on the that lot and building. I was warned not to interfere in the tribe's (Jacobs) business.
This site was the last remaining patch of original forest left of what once was the largest of the 7 Pine Islands.
The building on the site had been leased by Amphanol, a leading manufacturer of electronic parts and fasteners for 20 years. They left when the tribe wanted more money to renew the lease. What they left was a a major hazmat cleanup.
This is where the Seminole people once gathered their medicinal plants, and the palm fronds to thatch the chickees they lived in. It currently is the location of the water treatment plant for most of the residents of the Hollywood rez.
At that time there was a very high incidence of kidney stones. The water treatment plant did not have to answer to any outside agency. Thus the inspiration for my project.
I had been advised that since I wasn't Florida Seminole, but Oklahoma Creek, that I should keep my mouth shut. Eventually my family was pressured to move off the rez over the next few years.
