Those subsidies are meant to prop up failing farms (aka small farmers) so that they aren't put out of business by more efficient farms. Without the subsidies incompetent farmers would be replaced by competent ones. That drives the price of food in the US artificially up, not artificially down. In addition, ethanol and 100,000 other UDSA and FDA policies are driving food up. The reason is because they want 40,000 people to continue to starve to death everyday. It's population reduction
