That's because Japanese uses a syllabary system (Katakana) to write foreign words, and the closest to Chrono Trigger is "KuRoNo ToRiGa-", which would become クロノ・トリガー in Japanese characters. :P

Also, the r-sounds are pronounced by hitting the upper part of the mouth with your tongue, and press it forward.
