I don't know much about British Middle Ages but in Germany, there were plenty of rights for them! Check out "Sachsenspiegel", a 13th C. german law book, it tells us about people's rights in daily life, marriage rules, inheritance rules, jurisdiction and so on. As I said, don't know much about Britain, but Germany was not a such "lawless" place back in 800 years.
