In the 70's American movies were so creative , artistic and of high quality - the American cinema was at it's height !

One of my favorite films. Hackman should have been nominated best actor for this masterpiece of american cinema.

What are you talking about "it was just starting"? American cinema has been around since the early 20th century. Film history did not start in the 70's. And of course it is hard to be original today, but just because it was 40 years ago, doesn't mean that making creative, artistic films in the 70's was any easy - there were a lot of competition back then too.

So sad how they bugged his phone, yet he somehow can't bring himself to realize their new technology was that good that they wouldn't even need to plant a physical bug in the reciever anymore... You hear the explination earlier in the film, the phone rings once, setting up the connection, and then it acts as the bug. So the audience knows where the "bug" is, it's literally the telephone itself, yet we see him destroy the whole apartment and even his statue of the Blessed Virgin.... sad ending...
