This is a video of a female 11 foot Burmese python that I had borrowed for $100 from someone I know. Now, the individual shall remain unnamed, since this is pure neglect and animal cruelty/abuse. The story:
** The owner came over my house to bring her on a Wednesday, in order for her to "get acquainted" with me. (I needed her for a few hours on Saturday - by the way, I own my own 6 snakes, but needed an albino Burm). So he shows up at 9pm or so; I put her in a huge tank that I use for one of my mature Red Tail Boas, on coconut bedding and fresh bowl of water. Owner leaves at 11pm, and my home now being quiet, this is what I observe !!!! Panicked, I remove the bedding since it was getting into her mouth from all the mucus coming out of her lungs and drooling on her chin, and promptly take video, because obviously this poor animal is in SEVERE distress, and I don't want her to die on me ! Not on MY watch, it would break my heart #1, owner would wonder what I did to her, and I'd surely have to pay for her ! So I have a stethoscope (doctors use it to listen to our lungs when we have a cold, for those who aren't familiar with it's name), and I listen to her lungs as she breathes. [result: lungs filled with liquid ! Mucus or whatever, it's making it impossible to breathe for the poor thing ! (she was breathing 3 times a minute, approximately ) After 3 videos (that I will post !) I called him at 2a.m., pissed off and panicked.
His reply ? He tried each & all of the following, in this order, after seeing I'm not buying his poor ass excuses :
--- "Oh, the guy who sold her to me said she was gonna have a little mucus - it's perfectly normal since she just had babies"...
----- " Calm down, she probably drank too much water and choked on it "....
---- " I don't know what to tell you, but she wasn't doing that HERE ! " (meaning at HIS house!)
---- " She's fine, I'll come get her tomorrow afternoon; as a matter of fact I'll even take her to the Halloween Parade !"
---- " I know, I know, she took 4 shots when I got her 2 months ago, and was fine, she stopped wheezing after that ! " (as if this is "wheezing" !! )
---- " No way I can come get her now ! There is nothing wrong with her, trust me !"

etc., etc...... and so on. Then finally :
---- "Just remove the water bowl !!! That way she can't do that anymore, there you go ! "
(I told him the poor animal was trying to flush out its own mucus from the lungs so she can breathe, by swallowing water on purpose, then forcing it out her mouth and nose !!! But this way she can die by drowning. Amazing & smart animal though. )

Side note: I rescued another snake from this person in early summer, also because of abuse and neglect. A 6 1/2 foot Colombian Boa (Crawl Cay, to be more exact) was FULL of mites that infected my whole collection, missing scales from being 'pimped' all over the city for money, malnourished (this one is also not fed - you can see her ribs !), and not handled at all except when taken out to make money. He came to me and went into shed after 2 weeks, but it was so bad that his skin was coming off in quarter-sized patches ! He is now doing great, has no more skin scars, is getting chunky, and even his behavior is so much better that my children handle him, I am happy to report . :) By the way, this individual keeps his snakes in X-tra large dog carriers with NO ventilation or bedding, NO light bulbs or any source of heat what so ever, on the floor of a one-room studio !! No, he cannot be reported, since he knows the Animal Control supervisor on a first-name, friendly basis, and he gets his animals back the next day. ( apparently he HAS HAD them taken away before )

So the day after tomorrow I am taking this animal to the vet, and will probably buy her. Eventually I will not be able to keep her, since Burms are known to grow to large sizes, and I simply will not have the room. But we'll see.... Until then I just wanna get her off his hands as soon as I can.
She is on newspaper and a towel now, getting ventilation, water from a plant sprayer (since I cannot put a water bowl in with her..) and plenty of monitored heat around the clock .****

Thank you for viewing. If you feel like commenting, please try not to use fowl language - YouTube will make me remove. I know this owner deserves it, but please behave... And any advice is welcome, (especially since the mucus in tinged with blood, as you will see on the tissue) even though by the time you guys view, the vet appointment probably would have passed already. Peace out to all, thanks and much love right back to ya for animal lovers !

  • When she next sheds you are going to be finding some nasty stuff around her head that had came off with the new layer of skin, trust me.

  • Oh.....ew, really ?? None of mine have ever been sick, so I really don't know what to expect... Thanks for the 'warning' ! :)

  • It's good that you managed to get her away from the guy. She is REALLY dehydrated and thin, you shouldn't be able it pick up skin like that and you can see that the skin is even folding in places. I had a ball python with a bad respiratory infection, what I did was take some Vicks vapor rub and mix it with steaming hot water inside a coffee mug, and hold the snakes head over the top of it. It sounds stupid but just like people it will open up the nasal passages for snakes too.

  • Yes, she is thin, but after that rat she looks so much better ! She is so hungry she snaps at ME ! But I don't blame her, who knows how long she hasn't eaten for.... I just leave her alone if she's hissy, and try another day. [ Because I am having problems giving her the shots - she tries to escape while the needle is in her.... she is VERY strong ! I am hoping she'll pull through..... ]

    :)

  • This is awful! How could he have let such a beautiful animal get so ill? I really hope she pulls through. Thumbs up to you for taking her under your wing. Maybe a slightly warm bath will help to release the mucus. My Ball had a chest infection and mucus when i got her and i brought her out where there were high and low surfaces. She would drape over things and hang so the mucus could drain out. Might be helpful for you. Goodluck!!! Please keep us all posted. xx

  • All his animals are sick..... Fortunately, I hear he is selling them all. And as for this one, he hasn't called ONCE since Oct. 27th tp see how this poor animal is doing ! I called twice - once to let him know she was doing bad, and again to ask for help to feed her. (she is too strong for me alone) He never returned my calls.... ** Update: she ate a rat, and is doing better ! Waiting for antibiotics to come in at the vet, I an starting a 1 month-course of shots.

  • she is doing great she is 5 1/2 feet now after a long fight to keep her alive. she is a monster on eating she has a huge appitite she eats 1 large rat every 10 to 14 days. she does have some stunted growth though but i can't wait to see the size she will get when she is a full adult she is the tamest boa i have except when she is hungry she will bite anything that reaches in her home.

  • did the burm make it. how is she doing now. I am so glad to here you saved that poor big girl. i can't believe he can't be called on it doesn't matter if you know the head of the animal control he should be arrested for what he had done. but i am glad to here that you saved her. I have two big boas my self 1 i got as a baby that was highly malnurished and skinny you could feel the other side of her threw her bones but after a few days in a nice warm place and a good sized meal and water

  • Poor Burm! I recently rescued a red tail who's tail was eaten off by a rat. She had this injury for 6 months, with no vet visit. She had a terrible infection through her body, but I explained to the young owner that she would certainly die if she didn't get to a vet, so he handed her over to me (he loved her, but couldn't afford a vet), and I got her fixed up. Now her tail is all healed up and she eats like a monster! Glad you rescued this big gal, she's a real looker!

  • awwwwwwwwwwww poor snake im sad

  • Yeah I bought a boa a few weeks ago, the guy told me she was healthy aside from eing extremely underweight. I brought her home to find her weezing, what sounds like "sneezing", she yawns more than she should, and she had mites. Some people just want them to be somebody else's problem.

  • Have you thought of renting or buying a nebuliser? I`ve had to use one on a snake once and the poor thing was so relieved by it. About an hour twice a day I think it was. The snake went in a tub and the tub was then FILLED with aromatic steam, well not steam really, tiny tiny water particles but it looks like steam. This case would benefit from nebulising quite significantly. I just loathe this sort of story. It happens far too often too. Can`t you call the cops and explain the situation?

  • youre a very good person to get that python away from that moron, i was just wondering if she pulled through tho?

  • how is she now?

  • Its nice that your helping a sick snake get back to health even knowing that u will not b able to keep it. I just wonder why the man that was selling the snakes even had them. snakes are for people who will care for them. most of them r not even hard to care for. u just need hide water heat. not hard. And how is the snake doing now?

  • Yeah thats RI,I Have had Several burms that have came to me in this Position,I am guessing she is doing better,You need a Humidifier and to raise the heating up to 90 All round,Since she is on AntiBiotics,Baytril I am assuming. You want to feed her as much as possible She will acually hack up the Mucus,Since she ate She should pull out of RI in a month keep her warm its the most important thing,If not it can Turn into Something worse,I raise burms and retics checkout my profile have my 17 footer
