i think the thud sound was from the paddle hitting the water, not the boat hitting the ground. the boat went nearly fully submerged. with the sound of the waterfall as well as the degree of sound-muffling that 6 feet of water would cause, there's no way you would have heard that boat hit the ground even if it did.
