Rachel Alexandra cemented herself as one of the best fillies of all-time in a race for the ages, as she set a suicidal pace and then was all out under Calvin Borel to hold off a bold charge from Macho Again to win the $750,000 Woodward Stakes (gr. I) by a head in electrifying fashion Sept. 5 at Saratoga. Sent off at 1-5, Rachel Alexandra stayed perfect in eight starts this season and became the first female to win the prestigious Woodward in which she faced older males for the first time. Only one other 3-year-old filly had ever run in the Woodward—Summer Guest, who was third in 1972. The victory also makes the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro the first 3-year-old filly to win a grade I unrestricted route race on the dirt in New York since the system of grading races began in 1973. It almost certainly locked up Horse of the Year honors too, which would make her the first filly to earn that award since Busher in 1945.

GpL...imo it's the other way around...zenyattas second best race was on dirt in OP...her best race was at the hirsch...the classic was just another workout for her..she was still blowing by horses at the finish...and it wouldn't matter much if this race was on dirt...medaglia doro crops are racing well on turf/synth...just like how rachel raced well in keeneland..rachel's handlers know their chance in the breeders is not good and even worse against the mare...
There's 10 million waiting for Zenyatta at the new synthetic track at Dubai in March. If Moss doesn't go for it he's nuts. She could retire the richest horse in North American racing. She proved she's the best on poly. Moss cannot race her in the usual races anymore. She is now required to race the best and must travel to those tracks that feature the best, even her most ardent admirers must admit anything less is a sham.
DH I disagree completely Rachel's already proven beyer means nothing when she destroyed Munnings in the Haskell I don't think Zenyatta would feel comfortable enough on dirt to take Rachel down in her comfort zone. The same way while Rachel has won on synthetics I wouldn't feel happy about pitting her against her biggest rival on synthetics, where she thrives. Synthetics and dirt are two different surfaces, arguable as different as turf and dirt. No sense if trying to compare.
Enough with the ducking already people, seriously. PLEASE be mature and keep in mind Rachel was not the only one who opted out because of the synthetics. Have a little respect for a good horseman's decision. Zen never runs in slop; Rachel doesn't run on synthetics (not since she switched owners anyway). Just give it up, people.
MQ Yeah, but hide sight is 20-20. I think Zen would have been in those races if she had not been carrying Personal Ensign on her back in 2009. Other then LIS the mares she raced in 09 were not great (LIS is great). But lets not forget in 08 she raced and beat the very best fillies and mares in the USA. In 09 the best other then LIS ducked her. Not Zens fault that nobody wanted to race her in 09. She beat every horse that showed up, broke PEs record and became the first mare ever to win the BCC
Great, now we get to see how good RA really is. There are some very good mares out there and Summers Bird is out there too. Should be a fun year in racing.
I think Zen is still in lite training too, has not shipped to Ky yet. Wonder what's up with that? I do remember hearing some noise about maybe Zen doing a few races in early 2010. Wouldn't make much sense to risk the great mare unless "you know who" were to show up. How about Zen, RA, LIS n CJ all in the gate. what a race!
