Rachel Alexandra cemented herself as one of the best fillies of all-time in a race for the ages, as she set a suicidal pace and then was all out under Calvin Borel to hold off a bold charge from Macho Again to win the $750,000 Woodward Stakes (gr. I) by a head in electrifying fashion Sept. 5 at Saratoga. Sent off at 1-5, Rachel Alexandra stayed perfect in eight starts this season and became the first female to win the prestigious Woodward in which she faced older males for the first time. Only one other 3-year-old filly had ever run in the Woodward—Summer Guest, who was third in 1972. The victory also makes the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro the first 3-year-old filly to win a grade I unrestricted route race on the dirt in New York since the system of grading races began in 1973. It almost certainly locked up Horse of the Year honors too, which would make her the first filly to earn that award since Busher in 1945.

RA put together a great resume and the votes are in. RA will be HoY. That said she was dying here and never went over 1 3/16. I feel that Zenyatta would have run right by her just as Z did everyone else in every race she ever ran.
duhru: when Rachel thumped Summer Bird in the Haskell, was he "THE BEST IN THE WORLD" , as you're now saying he was when he ran in the BC? How about MtB, who RA beat in the Preakness? He sucked in the Preakness, but had become part of "THE BEST IN THE WORLD" field in the BC??
Richard's Kid was a fluke in PC. Rip van W. was not himself. Gio Ponti is better on turf. Quality Road didn't even make it into the actual race. StS & RA, the best in the world, did not enter. BC field:hardly the "BEST"
Hey getcreamed, that's what "devil's advocate" means: what I proposed (MtB for HOY) was only proposed to show how ridiculous it would be to give Zenyatta HOY based on, like MtB, ONE race.
Any trainer who rests a horse all year with a weak campaign like Z., when that horse clearly has major advantages (e.g. not racing at 2 YO, not shipping anywhere, size) over its usual competition is going to give that horse an edge when it eventually faces a better, but not GREAT, field. This was Zen's '09 BC
TVG is based in LA and they are a bunch of homeys, yet overall they still believe RA will win HOY. We'll find out on Jan 18 but since that event is based in LA the deck is stacked in favor of the home crowd favorite. Shoot, Zenyatta's entire career has been orchestrated like a Hollywood movie script.
You're kidding right? Well then I'll opt for Gitano Hernando who beat a similar field Zenyatta beat a month before the BC at Santa Anita. In other words the BC was B-O-G-U-S. Next year real dirt not phony dirt.

A marginal grade 2 horse barely beating a grade 3 horses in Macho again and Bullsbay.
STOP KIDDING YOURSELVES. She beat restricted 3 year old barely grade 1 horses while ZENYATTA BEAT THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
