Swades: As Mohan ingratiates himself into the hearts of all the villagers (including her own), Gîtâ's indifference and resolve gives way into inner conflict (as she's unable to admit to herself that she's feeling more than just gratitude for his saving her school). She accuses him angrily of neglect and base motives for wanting to take Kaveriamma away, expresses fear of being orphaned again, tries to soften his heart with self-pity, and finally stomps off in tearful desperation as he shows himself cruelly unyielding. By this time, Mohan is clearly entertaining thoughts of taking GîT6a as well back with him to America (though revealing this would be premature). This heart-to-heart altercation only renders her the more vulnerable to her adversary's emotional claims and, in retrospect, will assume the nature of a violent lovers' quarrel.

  • Friends,

You might appreciate Swades better when you see it again after reading my ongoing review of its aesthetics entitled the "Science of love: look into Gîtâ's eyes in the Homeland."

Click on my user-name above, and when you get to my YouTube profile, click on the link to my svAbhinava website: you'll see the link to the review in the "What's New" section, top of the left sidebar (unfortunately, URLs don't seem to be permitted in these comments).

    Enjoy!

  • Hmmm...that scene had the potential to be both dynamic and emotional - instead you end up cringing as Gita, played by Gayatri Joshi, fails to deliver.
