A new version of the bipartisan DREAM Act, which addresses the tragedy of young people who grew up in the United States and have graduated from U.S. high schools but whose future is circumscribed by current immigration laws, has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Richard Durbin (D-IL). Under current law, these young people generally derive their immigration status solely from their parents, and when the parents are undocumented or in immigration limbo, their children have no mechanism to obtain legal residency. The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act (S. 1545), introduced on July 31, 2003, provides such a mechanism for those who are able to meet certain conditions.

The leading bill in the House addressing the same issue is HR 1684 (Cannon, R-UT), known as the Student Adjustment Act. HR 1684 was introduced this spring and currently has 66 cosponsors from both parties.

  • There are many ways to prove you have been in the country for 5+ years. School records, medical records, plane tickets and stamps in passports(many immigrants come into this country by plane). These are just a few of the best ways to prove that. Should immigrant kids who grew up in America be punished for what their idiot parents did? Deporting these kids is inhumane. None of them will be able to assimilate into the culture of their birth countries since they never lived there.

  • Liberals who support illegal immigrants are actually - unknowingly - siding with greedy U.S. corporations. Why? Because they (ie. liberals) are protecting corporations profit rich, cheap labor workers.

WHO WINS? Greedy companies AND illegal workers (earning FAR more than in Mexico).

WHO LOSES? The U.S. labor class (U.S. proletariat) via job losses to illegal workers & depressed wages.

Thus 120 years of American wage struggles fought since the Haymarket Rebellion of 1886 are being undermined.

  • Interesting.

The same liberals that champion the unions, and the "workers" champion the illegals....

  • Just think what a positive change these young, educated adults will make in their native countries when they return! My wife is a legal immigrant from the Philippines, and we cannot get approval for her siblings to even come visit us in the USA. So I do not approve of giving citizenship to people who snuck in here when my relatives cannot even visit me.

  • Maybe the child was not at fault when they were a child and had no control over the parents Illegal entry into the U.S. But once that child has reached adulthood and then made a decision to continue the criminal activity of their parents by remaining here illegally, then they too are now a criminal.

We don't accept excuses that, " Oh I'm sorry I'm a Bank Robber, It's all I know because my parent raised me as a Bank Robber. NO.. That's no excuse for breaking the law.

    Say "NO" to Dream Amnesty

  • Then we don't need a DREAM Act. As the law currently stands, the illegals, their children, and presumably any other semi-sentient life-form could come to our colleges, BUT they'd have to pay their own way! THAT is what they're bitching about: They're starting to EXPECT Americans to pay their way, even though it undercuts our OWN people!

As to the other, bills are currently in the works to repeal the chain-migration laws, and a surprisingly high number of LEGAL Hispanics are SUPPORTING the bills!

  • If you are now of age, then you ARE "illegal" by choice. You have the choice to do the right thing....self-deport and apply to come into the country the right way. There should be NO opportunity to adjust status in country.

And no...you haven't proven that you deserve to be here. You have proven that our immigration system is UNFAIR to those who follow the rules. That's what you have proven.

Go home, wait 10 years--or as long as it takes--come back LEGALLY!

  • I don't agree, they're asking for legal status even though they came here illegally.

Nationwide, only 53% of Hispanics graduate high school, the lowest rate of all ethnic groups. The California Research Bureau predicted if exit exams were used, the Hispanic grad rate would drop to well below 30%.

Maywood, California is 96% Latino. Almost half the adult population did not finish 9th grade. Called the most corrupt city in the USA.

Their teen birthrate was twice the national average in 2000.
