AMC was very inventive...this is the new stationwagon added this year to the Pacer hatchback. Standard engine was the 232 c.i. ohv six, optional, the 258 c.i. six.
The stationwagon added even more cargo carrying capacity to the Pacer. It was certainly not like any other car on the road!

  • never had a pacer,,, and probably never will,,, my wife, who was four when this car was made, has forbidden me from getting one.

  • @Taranau You are not alone in never having a Pacer! They certainly were an unusual car, and had a "love it, or hate it" styling! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 I don't mind them so much. But my wife does. She like AMX's and Rebels, though. I remember a TV commercial where somebody was able to drive a Nova into the back of a Pacer cut in half. I thought that was great, but my dad wasn't impressed.

  • @Taranau That may have been a subtle way of imitating the strange ads that Volkswagen used at the time...I still remember a Beetle centered on the magazine page, with the word "LEMON" directly underneath it..the message-- the car failed the final inspection at the factory, so back it goes for repair! VW seemed pretty successful at this, for people expected the unexpected from them. I think Pacer was trying to do the unconventional too! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Oh, forgot to mention, the engine compartment was very crowded as it was to have the rotary engine, but it didn't pan out ...

  • @donnyboyblue Hey, Donovan! Great point...the rotary engine was going to be under the Chevy Monza car's hood, too! It too was cramped! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 I agree.

  • @raconter1 I agree. Whatever the engine it was supposed to have, the grille should've stayed like this.

  • @donnyboyblue Hey, Donovan! Cool...you had the owner experience with this car! I thought something was strange with that ornament!! I was wondering how AMC got away with it..but as you say, it was an owner "customization"! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! Cool you mentioned that..the 78 grille got neelessly bigger..this looks nicer to my eye! Thanks! :) Jack

  • I think it has a better looking front end styling than that of the V8 model.
