Down by the Salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the Salley gardens with her little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

  • The brilliant Andreas Scholl in 1999, recording the folk song for his CD 'Wayfaring Stranger.' This folk song was adapted from the poem of the same name by WB Yeats published in 1889.

  • @gwbassoc I think the arrangement suits the song perfectly BECAUSE it is so simple.

  • beautiful, those violins are like fingers down my spine....

  • Scholl is magnificent, but I prefer the BBC Proms version. Less orchestration is more with most of this English songs. The Proms version is devastatingly emotional in a way that this is not, partially due to the simple guitar accompaniment as well as the audience reaction.

  • Outrageously good!

  • I sang this song as a solo in a choir competition with my school and some of the audience cry!!!!

  • amazing voice

  • @aravis123 yes, thats what countertenor is i think.

  • waaaat?! this is actually a man's voice?

    INCONCEIVABLE

  • I've heard maybe a 100 versions of this old Irish song in the past 45 years,with topversions of Scottish tenor Kenneth McKellar and Irish contralto Bernadette Greevy(both died recently)also brilliant lighter voices like Anne Shelton(english)

    and Mary O'Hara(Irish),all totally different,ranging from full orchestra to a lonely harp.The Andrea Scholl-version is another true gem,unlike any other version. Superb voice with stunning orchestration.A very haunting and emotional interpretation.Bravo
