At the Hi5 OpenSocial hackathon I interviewed Andrew Laffoon CEO and Chief Mixbooker and Aryk Grosz, CTO from MixBook. They are 2 Berkeley graduates with a really cool media sharing application, http://www.mixbook.com/. They are porting their FaceBook application FunBook to OpenSocial. Quotes from the interview: About the OpenSocial API: "OpenSocial promise: one API for many sites." Compared to the Facebook API: "Different implementations, more javascript, xml. Both sides have their merit. What developers are interested about: what are the viral channels, how can I build more applications?" Advice for beginner social application developers: "Look at the best applications out there. A/B Test a lot, which tweaks will increase the viral boost of the application? But you need to get the right concept first." Favorite Social applications: Causes, useful Monetization strategy: "Mixbook lets you create beautiful things in printed media, photos, posters, we partner with top photo producers" Technology used: Ruby on Rails Fun Story: "We launched our Facebook apps when we were on vacations, very soon our server went down. Bad idea to launch just before taking vacations."
