The classic opening title sequence used by the BBC for their Italia '90 World Cup coverage.

Credited with bringing opera to the football masses courtesy of Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of 'Nessun Dorma', resulting in it being adopted as a football anthem.

Such was it's popularity following the World Cup, the song was released by the 'Three Tenors' and reached number 2 in the UK singles charts.

Seems like only yesterday...

  • What a year that was....everything was great. Semi finals only but still the feel good factor, the music, the summer heat. I kissed goodbye to school aswell.....Will never forget it

  • @t0mme1981 yeah, the god damn voovoozelas or however its spelt!!!

  • This was the best World Cup! And I was only 9. We shudda won it too. Bloody clinical German penalties!

  • God that brings back the memories. Crying like a baby...

  • I am just old enough to remember the 1970 WC in Mexico. Fuzzy TV black and white pictures, coomentary on a poor telephone satellite link.

Mexico 70 was the best, followed by Spain 1982 and then Italia 90. Nessun Dorma, Gazza are the best memories though! And yes, we should have won!

Can anyone tell me what the outstanding moment of the last WC in South Africa was? Thought not.

  • beautiful, still painful touching even all these years since. best england side i have seen in my lifetime. we were bad in the opening stages but should have won it.

  • I watched it all in NZ. Yup we got all the English games live over here. In general it was a boring and low scoring world cup. What really made it exciting though was the English team and how they played. I mean, they really played with passion intensity and speed. While Gascoigne was player of the tournament, Des Walker played some great footy. England were unlucky not to do it.

  • golden era of football

  • Stuart pearce :(

  • great song and im 13 i love it wish i was alive when italia 90 was on
