World-class chain-shop Kentucky Fried Chicken, along with four other food-shops on New Bailey Road in the capital on Monday, was fined Tk 4.50 lakh for not maintaining food hygiene, said officials of a mobile court.

The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution team found serious violation of the existing laws regarding food production and distribution.

The mobile court, led by executive magistrate Mohammad Al Amin, also seized four syrup cylinders at Helvetia, one of the chain-shops.

BSTI officials said Helvetia was fined Tk 2 lakh as it was found mixing WASA supplied water with soft drinks.

The court also fined Thai Juice Bar Tk 50,000 for producing juice from rotten mangoes and grapes and Link King Chinese Restaurant Tk 50,000 for producing food in unhygienic and dirty place.

KFC was fined Tk 50,000 for serving and producing food without using hand-gloves, the BSTI officials said.

According to the rules, there is an obligation of putting on hand-gloves before preparing food items, the officials said.

Local chain shop Al-Baik was fined Tk 1 lakh over licences for producing bread and ice-cream and for preparing foods in unhygienic condition.
