she should have stuck to Gilbert and Sullivan-- she doesn't have the vocal chops to do roles like Cleopatra.

I dont agree with you. She has been a memorable Cleopatra, it would be difficult to better it and with Gilbert and Sullivan she has been also the best, Viva Valerie

the original italian describes how cleopatra loves and adores caesar. the original translation is:

i adore you, dear eyes

darts of love,

your rays

rejoice my breast.

my sad heart,

which constantly calls you

its beloved,

begs you for mercy.

This is beautiful singing and beautifully done. But I still hate these English-language versions. what does the original mean?

I cant stand the fact when people do English "TRANSLATIONS" It absoloutely doesnt mean or sound anything close to the original for instance here, it sounds like SHE is "Complaning"

@medievalmusicology That's not fair to say, since this isn't at all a translation. They are entire different words and ideas to the same music.

@x4812k I disagree too. Opera isn't all about blasting people out of their seats. It is a delicate art and Valerie Masterson has some real finesse. You should listen to her singing "Ach ich liebte" She handles high "D"s with such grace you'd be jealous.

I love her voice, but I agree this is a horrible translation. If it were in the original Italian this would be my favorite performance.

A song about love has been transformed into a complaint. I hated the translation. My teacher asked me to watch different performances before I sing this song. At first I thought v'adoro pupille to have just childish lyrics and repeated music over and over again, but thanx for showing me it can get worse in English!

This is the best example I've ever seen as to why one should NOT translate operas! Opera companies have invested in subtitle screens for a reason, people! Thanks for turning Cleopatra's aria into a little grumpy vent-fest.

Her singing is not so bad, she has a beautiful voice but this version in english has changed the really sense and the character of this aria. I think it's much more better to sing the operas in the original language than translate them, even if the composer or the public are from different nationality.
