On September 21, 2011, the Atlantic Council hosted its Second Annual Global Citizen Awards Dinner in New York. As last year, it brought together leaders from the United States, Europe and the world -- including senior government officials, ambassadors, chief executives of some of the world's most influential global companies and media leaders.
The Council presented a Global Citizen Award posthumously to Prime Minister Rafik Hariri of Lebanon, whose vision of a prosperous and peaceful Middle East ended tragically with his assassination in 2005. Yet the principles he governed by have since found new hope in the Arab Awakening - and through the work of the Atlantic Council's new Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East. His son, Bahaa Hariri, accepted the award in his honor.
