There is clearly an efficient way and an inefficient way to strangle. Most people learn the inefficient way with the elbow indexed at the chin. With the elbow at the chin, too many gaps are created and this increases the time for the strangle to work. In the Self Defense Training System (http://www.theselfdefenseco.com) you learn to put the forearm across the throat, not the elbow, thus creating a more painful experience. It not only works infinitely faster than the sport choke, it triggers the gag reflex and makes the experience a lot more painful (try it yourself). In this video you can clearly see the difference from the reaction the subject being strangled. Plus we do a few more things like shoulder position, head position, breathing, etc that we cover in The Self Defense Training System (www.theselfdefenseco.com). The only time we wind up with the elbow at the chin is when we miss the correct position. Believe me, if the elbow at the chin worked better, we'd be doing it. I know, Hulk Hogan didn't do it that way, but what are you going to do.

  • In combat you're aiming to mess a guy up not win via submission. I have never seen a rear naked choke take that long to warrant a response. I have personally taken grown men to unconciousness with it in seconds and had the same done to me. the cross throat choke, while painful, does not function primarily to cut off the carotid arteries, anatomically it would have a tough time closing them off completely without first crushing the trachea. Sorry to troll, just my opinion.

  • @ToraJutsu01 You didn't choke him long enough. At the end of the day, it's about what works the fastest, the pain is a distraction so you can continue the strangle. I'm sure you have a vast experience in crushing throats and I'm sure what you say is true. You posted it, so it has to be true. I'm am positive that you will cause your target to pass out well before any damage to the throat occurs. Don't apologize, you're an excellent troll.

  • In Judo, a strangle is catergorised as a move done to effect the two jugulars, whereas a choke is direct damage to the throat. I've found effectiveness in both, but I prefer the strangle as I find it easier to control the opponent.

  • I'm wondering where you learned this choke hold? In the Marines or other branch of special forces or in a law enforcement enviroment or MMA training? It certainly has the element to kill quickly and quietly, and i would advise NOBODY to attempt any type of choke hold unless you are trained and certified. That said, if your LIFE IS ON THE LINE i guess each individual might need to do whatever to survive a true life or death encounter. You just better be prepared to defend your actions if it kills

  • We were taught the Rear Naked choke in the police academy, and if done properly you will either get compliance in about 2 seconds or a choke out in 3 to 4 seconds. I have seen some drop out in about 2 seconds if done with sufficent force,. It all depends on whether you're going for compliance/control from an individual or trying to incapacitate/choke out an individual. I can see where this might be more effective, but i can also see this has an added inherant danger of permanent injury/death.,

  • Nice! Fast and effective. But I have to disagree. The elbow lock WILL get the same result, IF you place the other hand behind the head and then apply the pressure, it is instantaneous! I know! But I do like this method as well I will have to try it.

  • Second I DO think there is a time and a place for this choke when a loved one or your life is on the line, especially when there is more than one attacker. The problem I have with this choke is that you can crush the larynx and that could open you up to civil suits and jail time. What I like about the rear naked is that when I choke someone out and the police come, there isn't any damage to his body. Working as a bouncer, I am to familiar with charges. I would use this only in deadly force.

  • Hello Mr. Ross...I think this choke works...no doubt about it, but here is my concern: Since this is not a blood choke it is much, much more risky. 1st The risk in class/training are NEW students lack the control to practice safely, thus injuring their partners...injured students don't return and that is a loss of income. People want a safe environment to train in. I wouldn't teach this to beginners, only intermediate/advanced students..for safety reasons..just my opinion.

  • @jasonzuvela yup we do and the distinction is there for good reason, like you said.. That is an excellent point, a pain based technique is far less reliable against anyone with an altered mental state, whether from drink, drugs, adrenaline or just sheer determination and rage. The cross throat will work eventually, but it doesn't give you the immediacy of the Rear naked in terms of unconsciousness.

  • @ToraJutsu01 wholeheartedly agree with u. Isn't a good demo. Doesn't explore mechanics of the 2 ways properly. I also question parts of his execution - just doesn't seem genuine to say the least. In oz, we go by language technicality that choke affects trachea, while strangle affects arteries. The real difference in efficiency: 'How long do u think u'll maintain consciousness with 2 completely closed carotid arteries?' vs 'How long long can u hold ur breath?' A meth head doesn't care about pain!

  • @DarkMagician70 I like your explanation, thats very true, they warrant vastly different responses.

  • @angelajudochop I'm not having a go at your choke, i've also used it and it works but i think you misrepresented the rear naked choke. I do have quite a few years of submission and combatives experience, no need to treat me like the majority of youtube trolls who enjoy commenting on shit they dont know anything about. Look at it anatomically, a good RNC directly compresses the carotids at a good angle for complete closure. The other applies force at a different angle, thus the diferent effect.
