a tomb guard Marches 21 steps down the black mat behind the Tomb. Turns, faces east for 21 seconds. Turns and faces north for 21 seconds. Takes 21 steps down the mat. Repeats the routine until the soldier is relieved at the Changing of the Guard. Twenty-one was chosen because it symbolizes the highest military honor that can be bestowed the 21-gun salute. After each turn, the Guard executes a "shoulder-arms" to the visitors to that the Guard stands between the Tomb and any possible threat.

i can understand not getting the significance of it but this is important to us these guys guard this tomb to honer those who they truly lost everything there families have no clue what happened to them and wonder to this day if there still alive or not if you would like i can link you video that explains the tomb, the guards and Arlington itself it is our most sacred and hallowed ground where we put our honored dead here is a link if you want to know more /watch?v=EyOSpMjwZps
