JJames Commentary:

This is a Tool-assisted Speedrun of a Super Mario World ROM hack, called Super Mario World Extra. (Original title eh?)

There are a few things to note, firstly being that this is pretty much a level only hack with the exception of a couple tweaks here and there on the overworld and level names. Otherwise, the only real change is the levels. Secondly, I am no real hardcore TASer. I don't do things to frame perfection, nor do I use hidden values and such to do crazy tricks like the 16 hop. I do this with 0.3x speed and rewind states alone. I also make quite a few mistakes that I never bother going back and fixing so it's no true TAS. But still, I tried hard to complete a lot of levels as fast as I could so that accounts for something.

With that out of the way, let's get onto the level comments. Forest of Illusion time, split into two halves. Because it's so fragmented, there really isn't any specific order I do the levels in. I just do it by the least amount of overworld walking.

Great Grasslands 3 (Secret) - 0:37
Been a while since the last grasslands level. I fly through most of the level, I stop for the P-Switch though. I have tried hard to get to the key without using it but it's just damn near impossible.

Great Grasslands 3 (Normal) - 0:28
I had some fun smacking a few enemies while flying.

Great Lake 5 (Secret) - 2:06
If you got the red switch palace, getting this exit is impossible unless you are small Mario. I struggle with the throw blocks because when you pick one up, it counts as a sprite and the game limits how many sprites are onscreen at once. Too many sprites onscreen, the game won't let you pick up a block, due to the sprite limit. It'so nly protecting itself so I suppose I can chalk that up to poor level design on my part.

Blue Switch Palace - 0:12
Not much going on here.

Great Lake 5 (Normal) - 1:35
Since the blue switch palace was hit, the route is a bit different due to blue blocks blocking the paths. I also end up being totally done in by the sprite limit much harsher this time around, blah.

Great Grasslands 4 (Normal) - 0:31
For a change of pace (and since I was getting tired) I decided to spinfly through the level. That bit me back near the end. Stupid thing is, I end up repeating this mistake later on for the secret exit.

House of Boo 4 (Secret) - 1:20
Getting the secret exit here requires a lot of patience for little reward. The switch/block area can get troublesome. Don't ask why I never brought the P-Switch with me in the next screen, and for some reason, it never occured to me to rewind it.

  • why do so many people make ROM hacks? why cant they just play harder games

  • Well this was made to be harder, and it doesn't hurt to try a harder version of a classic game you love.
