What surprises me on the Time Teams going-ons about defences, is their lack of mention of wild animals in Britain then, wolves especially, who were getting more and more desperate for food, due to the lack of plain roaming large creatures to feed on.
This is described by the story of Gerlert, the wolfhound of old, an old story in time, maybe from the end of roaming wolves, as a sense of guilt from people, from their necessary demise, due to rising human population and sophistication.
