A note to people with compact cameras going to DSLRs. If your compact camera has manual settings LEARN how to use it manually before upgrading to a DSLR.

DSLRs can be overwhelming to most people who have never gone past the "Dummy" mode.

Read and view articles about photography. Talk to your relatives or friends who already own a dslr. Talk to them about your interest, ask them to teach you the basics of photography.

Invest in knowledge before investing in a dslr. :)

Im getting the D40 the only main difference is the D40X has more Mega Pixels but Im not going to print large photos, And for the price the D40 is well worth it.

@hewey999 I think a lot of people went from the D40 to the D90.

I have just bought a D7000 but I am keeping my little D40 as a "Back up" holiday camera. As the pictures it takes are STILL great even 5 Years after it went on sale. It still beats ANY 12-14-16 Mega pixel "Point and shoot" for image quality. WHY..Because it has a larger sensor! Mega-pixels don't tell the whole story.

@joejagdoc you could upgrade to a pro body d series dlsr such as the D2x if your comfortable with ebay. I did that route and I am very satisfied with my choice. I got a great deal on an awesome camera that blows these d40's and 90's out of the water.
