Lyrics:

Winter comes around,
And he knows he is homeward bound,
His heartbeat is the only sound he's known,

He once lost his way,
He knows now that was yesterday,
He fell down on his knees to pray for home.

We'll sing to the morning,
We'll sing till the bells they sound,
We'll sing till the wandering soul is found.

We'll sing to the morning,
We'll sing till the bells they sound,
We'll sing till the wandering soul is found.

He's found his way at last,
With each turn a new bond was cast,
His friends now hold him steady fast and true.

With peace in his eyes,
The fear now is a pain in the skies,
With friends near he sees only skies of blue

We'll sing to the morning,
We'll sing till the bells they sound,
We'll sing till the wandering soul is found.

We'll sing to the morning,
We'll sing till the bells they sound,
We'll sing till the wandering soul is found.

It's clearer every day,
He knows now he is here to stay,
He cares not why he went away so long.

He's found where he belongs,
He know he's been here all along,
He is smiling as he joins his friends in song.

We'll sing to the morning,
We'll sing till the bells they sound,
We'll sing till the wandering soul is found.

We'll sing to the morning,
We'll sing till the bells they sound,
We'll sing now the wandering soul is found.

  • Kate Rusby is a very talented folk singer and a lot of the songs that she covers do deal with death, sorrow and heartbroken love, but I wouldn't say all of her songs are like that and when you see her live, she is very funny and puts a lot of wit and humour into her shows, particularly when explaining songs like drowned lovers.

  • I went to one of Kate's gigs last night and she sang this :)

    She was SO inspiring :)

  • @dinerouk Dude, this isn't the same song. Look up the lyrics to both... they're entirely different, don't even sound the same... Did you actually listen to either one?

  • @wickedrocketelvispel

John Denver wrote it, probably the last one he wrote.

  • Maybe the last song John Denver wrote before his death

  • I'm in love with this song! It makes me think of one of my friends who died a year and a half ago, Hope his wandering soul has found it's place. He first introduced me to Kate Rusby's music and I thank him for it.

  • anyone got guitar tabs for it? I really want to practice this... Loved your Carols performance in london Kate :)

  • @MistyWilliams

You could listen to "the Yorkshire couple" , it is on the Live in Leeds DVD and you can see it on youtube. very amusing

  • I don't see it as being about death. It reminds me of the story of the prodigal son. Dunno if you've ever heard of it...

  • This song misses out a bit doesn't it? There's a second repeat of the chorus at the start.
