Dirk Nowitzki vs Kobe Bryant: Dirk across the board

Dirk Nowitzki is by far better than Kobe Bryant in all areas of the game, and had been even before the Dallas Mavericks swept the LA Lakers in the 2011 playoffs. Why?

Kobe rode Shaq to three titles, and when Shaq grew tired of Kobe and left, the Lakers not only became really bad under Kobe's leadership, they missed the playoffs for only the fifth time ever.

It wasn't until Pau Gasol arrived to save the day that Kobe, and the Lakers, started winning again.

While they were losing, Kobe took absolutely no responsibility for any of the losses and pointed his finger at every one of his team mates.

This was at a time when Kobe was routinely taking 30-40 shots per game and the Lakers were losing as a result.

Dirk has never had anyone protecting the paint until this year, and he's lead his team to 11 straight seasons of 50 plus wins (three 60 plus seasons), eleven straight playoff appearances, and even reached the finals with no one protecting paint.

As for individual stats, Kobe is considered the most clutch player and the best closer, but reality tells a different story.

Kobe's clutch stats are 37-117 in the last 24 seconds with the Lakers down three points or less. That's about 31%FG. The league average is 28+%. When the league average is 28% and Kobe's averagge is 31%, he is not clutch by any stretch of the imagination.

Dirk Nowitzki's clutch stats are 27-67 -- 38%, which is the highest percentage of anyone with more than 50 clutch shot attempts.

Kobe is the best closer? Not even close. Kobe's fourth quarter FG% is 39%, which is not supreme by any stretch. Dirk's fourh quarter FG% is 51% which is the best fourth quare percentage for anyone who's average scoring distance is beyond 10ft.

The abilities of Dirk vs the non-abilities of Kobe were made plain as day when Dallas and the Lakers recently met in the playoffs.

When it came time to close a game out, Dirk took over in the final minutes of games one and three and sealed the wins for Dallas while Kobe was nowhere to be seen.

Kobe scored all of four points in the fourth quarter of game three which was a must-win game for LA that saw the Lakers leading until Dirk took over in the final minutes.

Just like when Kobe missed the playoffs when he had no bigs protecting the paint, Kobe folded under the pressure after Dallas' big men picked apart LA's big men.

When LA's big men aren't doing the heavy lifting, Kobe is no where to be seen.

In fact, if he ever had to play alongside Shawn Bradley and Eric Dampier he may have had to change his name to Kobe McGrady (Tracy McGrady was more skilled than Kobe but never made it out of the first round of the playoffs)

I could obviously keep going and point out the fact that only one player in the history of the NBA has more 30+ point elimination games than Dirk, and Dirk is only one of four players in the history of the NBA to average 25 points and 10 rebounds in his entire playoff career, and only one of five players to average 1,600+ points and 500 rebounds in 4 consecutive seasons (Dirk has done it 11 consecutive seasons) but I won't keep going.

However, I could go on for days and weeks pointing out the difference between professional sports' biggest myth and the most humble professional athlete to ever exist.

By the way, when Kobe shoots the ball 25 plus times per game, LA has won 53% of those games. When he takes 30 plus shots they only 48% of the time. When Dirk shoots 25 plus times, Dallas wins 65% of the time.

When there's a chance to expose one of the biggest myths of all time, I take it.
