It seems the mystery box approach leads to great starts but does not guarantee great endings. Take Lost: pile up mystery boxes episode after episode, eventually gathering enough to fill a warehouse and then still overflow. Open a few random boxes along the way, but leave most closed. Then reach the end and realise there are way too many boxes to deal with anymore. Oops. Quick, burn the rest of the boxes, and claim it was all about the characters all along. That's the ticket. ;)
