  • Okay you dipshits, let me just say it is obvious that most of you are not familiar with Bernadette's work. SHE HAS ALWAYS HAD A SOMEWHAT RASPY QUALITY TO HER VOICE!!! If you listen to her voice throughout her entire career, even back when she was in her 20's, she sounded like this. It is NOT her straining or not being vocally strong, it is how HER REAL VOICE sounds! As someone who has seen her in most of roles I can say she always sings in this way. She cannot help how she naturally sounds.

  • I haven's seen all the Roses - but I've seen

    Angela,

    Patti,

    and Bernadette

and I have to tell you, Bernadette did it for me. She's always had that little scratch, that little strain in her voice. Her performance was magnificent - in a strangely received revival of the musical. It was SO much better produced than Patti's summer stock version.

  • I think that this would be awesome for Bernadette Peters if it was transposed higher. She's got such a great facility in her upper register, that a lot of other woman who sing this don't have. In comparison to someone like Patti LuPone, I feel that she doesn't have this Brassy bass tone to the same degree.

HOWEVER it is hard to judge because Musical Theatre also heavily depends on the visual aspect, which we don't get here, but we do in Patti's performance of the same song at the Tony's.

  • Bernadette is so vocally wrong for this brassy role. She can act it great but she shouldn't be singing this kind of show music. It doesn't naturally sit well in her vocals and I fear the strain it caused her. It's painful to hear. The score was specifically written for Ethel Merman's voice. Bernadette ain't got a big Merman voice.

  • "Schee ische beautiful!"

  • This definitely the best version of this song ever! Bernadette really did capture the true essence of the REAL Rose! You can hear her desperation in this song... you know at this point that it is Rose who wants to be in the spotlight and Bernadette portrays the anger so well in this song. Patti LuPone butchered this role (in my opinion) ... Bernadette IS Rose, even the real June said so.

  • Patti owns this song like no other!

  • I'm dying to hear her sing Have An Eggroll, Mr Goldstone. Does anybody know where I can find it?! O:

  • not my favourite, but still great :)

  • Okay maybe all the people who don't like this video should go and listen to some other Mama Rose. I for one would like to have this exceptional video kept clear of overly critical comments about someone else played this part better. Bernadette Peters is not worse, she is just different. I think she is better but that is my opinion and I love Gypsy so much that who plays Rose doesn't matter much.

  • Pretty & talented Ms Peters is a true national treasure! Gifted actress & singer. THANKS for posting this...one of my fave Broadway show tunes! You've made my day & my week! CHEERS!!! :-)

  • I saw Bernadette in concert with my school for free last year.

She sounds so amazing... she still looks twenty!
