when i type in sudo passwd it doesn't bring up enter unix password

Never listen to the haters. No such thing as a bad tip. I didn't know how to change root in buntu. I did know about sudo su though.

good tip, thanks
but you can just type
sudo su
then use your password, without having to create one for root.
