2011 Commencement Address by Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington, internationally renowned actor and director, delivered the address at the University of Pennsylvania's 255th Commencement on Monday, May 16. Washington is one of the nation's preeminent performing artists, having achieved wide acclaim for his film, theatrical and television performances, as well as his accomplishments in film directing and television production. Washington has received the most distinguished accolades of his art, including two Academy Awards and a Tony Award. At Commencement, Washington received an honorary doctor of arts degree.

I can't imagine there are dislikes here. To be invited by UPenn & spoke in front of thousands of graduates, it is an honor. Before criticizing the man's speech, ask yourself if you even have such honor to be invited to address at a commencement,

II like Denzel Washington and respect him. But you can't deny this speech was horrible. He was reading a handful of messy papers, looking down, losing his place, no cohesiveness, and obviously trying very hard because he had no real preparation. From a man whose profession is memorizing a script and acting it out with his body, mind, and senses, it’s obvious he put no effort into preparation. He's a great actor and I respect him, but, please, call it as it is. It was a weak and pathetic speech.
