  • i've been curious about jo vs bokkken. Since a bokken is really supposed to be a sword. In a jo vs katana fight, can't the katana cut through the jo? Does the jo never block the katana/bokken or is it always some sort of parry?

  • @a3spirit

This is a stilyzed fight, I don't think in reality (i.e. medieval japan) a jo fighter has many chance vs a katana holder. however, the moviment are such that the jo never come into contact to the edge of bokken, at most the jo should impact the hands grabbing the bokken.

  • I had to perform the jo kata for Homma-sensei I really need work...

  • are you student of gaku homma?...if so, would you please ask him if this kata is his creation?

  • It's not, if you go to any Aikido dojo that supplements training with weapons techniques it's mostly the same with minor variations. The kata is from O-sensei, not Homma-sensei.

  • I'm sorry but here in italy at aikikai nobody knows this kata. I also check around the web to find somewhere this 18 jo kata, but nobody knows it. the only kata known are 31 jo kata and 13 jo kata, the ones saito used to perform and teach.maybe this kata is the 31 jo kata with some cut.

  • IMO the problem with bo is that you can't cut with it. If I would be able to ask the instructor I'd ask why the samurai doesn't just go under the bo. It's just a stick and closer you get, less painful the hit will be. And closer you get, more damage you can do with your blade. It's very hard to fight with bo btw. ;/

  • @tunequeris

The bokken / sword is blocked at an angle. It would either get stuck in the jo or take out some chips, but not cut it in half.

But yes, if you're against a really experienced swordfighter, the odds are against.

  • this is aikido right? if so, yoshinkan or akikika (spelling... i know)

  • Yeah, I posted this before I had been at Nippon Kan that long. Sorry for the confusion.

  • This pairing is Homma Sensei's own creation. I used to be an uchideshi (live-in student) at Nippon-Kan and had to learn the paired set (as well as the off-pair set). One thing that Homma Sensei did was to pair the two kata to make them work one with the other.

  • Probably, I've heard of both. I go to the Denver, USA dojo.
